As most Southeast Asia travelers are aware, the variety of exotic fruits that can be found in the region is unlike anywhere else in the world.  Some fruits may require an adventurous palate (durian, anyone?), and others may take a bit of effort and skill to eat neatly (say, dragonfruit).  However, today’s post is dedicated to a delicious, yet often underrated, fruit - the avocado. Now, before living in this region, I was already a huge fun of avocado toast and guacamole.  When I moved to Jakarta though, I noticed there were entire kiosks in the mall dedicated to avocado smoothies or other similar drinks that contained avocados.  While intrigued, I never seemed to be in the mood to try one, mostly because I thought it would be a bit bland.

Recently, this all changed one afternoon when my fellow foodies and I happened across a cute bakery called Colette and Lola.  It was mostly a cake and cupcake store, but on the menu were also macarons and coffee.  Never one to pass up either, I decided to try their avocado coffee, some pastries, and macarons.

The winner of the day was the avocado coffee.  It was an avocado smoothie with a shot of coffee poured in, one scoop of vanilla ice cream and some slivers of milk chocolate.  It was the most surprising drink I have tried in a long time.  Each sip reminded me of summer with its light sweetness.  The combination of avocado, coffee, and ice cream was so refreshing that I was reminded of swinging in a hammock underneath a shaded tree and feeling the summer breeze on my skin.

The other two hits, albeit neither being their cakes or macarons, was their “Say Cheese!  Ovomaltine” cheesecake and Lola’s Vulcan pastry.  The cheesecake was creamy and rich, not overly sweet, on a dark chocolate crust.  And, the Lola’s Vulcan was a mound of 1/2 inch of chocolate ganache covered in a chocolate hard shell.  But, it’s uniqueness laid in the lemon custard filled puff pastry at the center of the ganache.  A surprising, yet sunny find.

If you are in the area, definitely try one of
these treats and the avocado coffee.  The latter has definitely inspired me to try other avocado coffees to do a taste test comparison, so stay tuned for more reviews.
